Street Soccer Arrives in Kelowna!

We Need Sponsors and Support!

2010 is proving to be an amazing year for soccer. Not only was the most prestigious soccer tournament, the World Cup, successfully held in South Africa in June but this week the annual Homeless World Cup kicked off in Rio de Janeiro. The latter gives homeless and marginalised people the chance to play in a competitive tournament and the benefits for the players are huge. But that’ s not all. Now, street soccer has arrived in Kelowna.

Street soccer is aimed directly at people who have lived on the streets and in shelters. For many, soccer is their saviour as it offers them a chance to stay active and get involved in their local community. Street Soccer is becoming more popular every year and there are now competitive leagues in several major cities across Canada.

Two local Kelowna residents who are new to the Okanagan are the people who are tasked with setting up a street soccer team here. Tom Maxwell and Tiffany Simpson are a young and enthusiastic couple with a passion for community involvement and lots of soccer experience. There’ s only one thing they need – players!

The aim of starting a street soccer team in Kelowna is to provide homeless and marginalised citizens an opportunity to participate in a weekly training-session and match with a chance to participate in the national street soccer championship. The players who perform well at the national championship, not only skilfully, but also in terms of spirit and hard work, will get the opportunity to represent Canada in the annual Homeless World Cup. The first goal is to take a Kelowna team to Vancouver to play the local Vancouver teams in an effort to expose the players to tournament style matches. They will then be taken to the National Championships in 2011 where they will have the opportunity to be selected to represent CANADA in the annual homeless world cup.

Practice has just started and Tom and Tiffany are now on the lookout for new players. For those who qualify for homeless street soccer, all that is needed is a pair of shoes. In order to achieve the goals of reaching Vancouver and the National Championship, Kelowna Street Soccer is also looking for a dedicated sponsor who would be able to help the team succeed. Any soccer equipment/monetary donations and sponsors would be very helpful in bringing great success to our Kelowna Street Soccer team.
